Fear of Flying
Fear of flying is one of the most common anxiety disorders, reflecting our increasing use of air travel.
Different people are frightened by different aspects of flying. For some it is the claustrophobic feeling of being enclosed in the cabin.
Others have the common problem of not being in control of the situation, and then there’s the group fed by disaster movies and the media
into becoming paranoid the plane will crash - due to extreme weather, mechanical failure or pilot error. A fear of heights can also be underpinning a fear of flying.
Whatever the detail of our fear, it is never logical and won’t be overcome by logical argument. Try convincing someone who is Arachnophobic that (British) spiders are harmless!
Invariably our fear of flying is rooted in our
limiting beliefs and has developed as an extension of those beliefs over time.
